One dish I have missed for the longest time is Penang Hokkien Mee, and one of the places that immediately came to mind was Old Green House Restaurant along Jalan Burma. With its Michelin Guide recognition, Old Green House has become a popular spot among both locals and tourists looking for Penang food.
I immediately ordered a bowl of their Hokkien Mee. But to my surprise, we had to bring the bowl to our own table. Ten years ago, they served it to us. This time, we had to do it ourselves!
Thankfully, the broth and taste remain as good as I remember. The rich, flavourful broth was exactly what I had been craving, and it was such a satisfying experience sipping the broth all the way to the end. For me, this was the highlight of the meal.
Next up was the Char Kuey Teow.
Well, it was okay. It had a decent amount of wok hei, and the portion was quite reasonable. However, the cockles were overcooked, which took away from the overall experience. And yes, I firmly believe that a good Penang Char Kuey Teow must come with fresh, juicy cockles.
I was also told to try their Bak Kut Teh.
I was hesitant because, honestly, how could Bak Kut Teh here possibly taste better than the ones in Klang?
And I was right. The Bak Kut Teh was average at best. Given the amount of amazing Penang local food available, I would rather save my tummy space for the island’s other delicacies.
Will I return?
Absolutely.
But I would come back specifically for the Hokkien Mee at Old Green House. The Char Kuey Teow was decent, while the Bak Kut Teh didn’t really impress me. But that bowl of Hokkien Mee and its rich broth? That alone is enough to bring me back. If you’re looking for Hokkien Mee in Penang, Old Green House on Jalan Burma is definitely one to put on your list.
