Strangers One Utama Review: Savoury Crepes, Pasta and Desserts

Strangers is now open at 1 Utama Shopping Centre! And yes, you read that right. It’s the same brand behind Strangers 47, the café along the same street as Kanna Curry House in Petaling Jaya.

I used to visit Strangers 47 quite often, but over time, my visits became less frequent. The main reason? Parking. Finding a parking spot could be such a hassle that it slowly put me off making the trip.

Now that Strangers has opened in 1 Utama, I finally have a reason to rekindle my love for its crepes. There’s something about a simple, well-made crepe that feels wholesome and comforting. Sometimes, that’s all you need for a satisfying meal.

We visited during lunchtime, and the café was packed. Be prepared to wait for a table, unless you don’t mind sitting outdoors. Which was exactly what we did.

We ordered quite a spread, and here’s what we thought of the food.

1. Shashuka (RM38)

Shashuka at Strangers, One U

We started with the shusatsa. I’m not usually a big fan of this dish, but I can see why it works as a sharing platter. The flavours are quite rich, and having a portion on your own might feel a little overwhelming. Sharing it with others, however, makes it much more enjoyable. A little goes a long way!

2. Loaded Cheesy Beef Fries (RM30)

Next up were the loaded fries. Well, fries are fries, and these did the job. They’re a good option to share while waiting for the mains to arrive.

3. Buttermilk Chicken Crepe (RM28)

The buttermilk savoury crepe was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we made that day. The chicken was fragrant and sufficiently crispy, pairing beautifully with the thin, yellow crepe. Every bite was delicious, and despite the rich flavours, the dish didn’t feel overly heavy or indulgent.

4. Miso Duck Pasta (RM38)

I also ordered the miso pasta with smoked duck, and wow, it was another satisfying dish. The presentation was appealing, but thankfully, the taste lived up to the looks. The flavours were fantastic, making this a pleasant surprise beyond the café’s crepe offerings.

5. Kayaman (RM21)

Kayaman, Strangers One U

Of course, we couldn’t leave without dessert. We ended our meal with the kaya banana crepe, and it was such a lovely way to round off lunch. The kaya filling was thick and generously spread, giving every bite a rich, fragrant sweetness. There’s something special about combining familiar Asian flavours with a French-style crepe. It’s a simple idea, but one that works beautifully.

This dessert was comforting, indulgent, and absolutely heartwarming. If you enjoy kaya and banana, don’t skip this one.

One thing to note before you visit: I’d recommend spending your money on the food rather than the drinks. We found the drinks disappointing because the glasses were so small for the price we paid. They felt rather overpriced, especially compared with the food.

Will I return?

Yes, I’d return to Strangers for the food, especially the crepes, but I’d skip the drinks next time.

Overall, the buttermilk savoury crepe was a standout, the miso pasta with smoked duck was satisfying, and the kaya banana crepe was a lovely finish to the meal. The only letdown was the drinks, which felt overpriced for their portion sizes.
