Looking for a traditional Penang breakfast? Toh Soon Cafe is one of those old-school places that should be on your list.
And no, I am not talking about a cafe called Toh Soon. I mean the famous Toh Soon Cafe on Lebuh Campbell in George Town, a traditional kopitiam-style breakfast spot that has served hungry customers for years.
The cafe opens at 7am, and you can expect to see a queue, especially during weekends. Thankfully, the morning weather in Penang is usually rather pleasant, making it quite nice to sit down and enjoy a traditional breakfast here.
The menu is simple, with the usual kopitiam favourites. Here is our verdict on what we tried.
1. Charcoal Toast
The toasted bread was one of my favourites. You can choose your own filling, from peanut butter to kaya, before the bread is toasted the traditional way over charcoal. The result is fragrant, slightly crisp on the outside, and wonderfully comforting. Every bite reminded me of the kind of traditional toast I used to have whenever I visited my hometown.
2. Steamed Bread
The steamed bread, on the other hand, was slightly underwhelming. There was nothing particularly special about it. If you prefer something softer in the morning, you can certainly give it a try, but between the two, I would definitely choose the charcoal-toasted bread.
3. Half-Boiled Eggs
Somehow, the half-boiled eggs here tasted much better than expected. The eggs were cooked just right, with the whites set while the yolks remained wonderfully runny. Add a dash of white pepper and a little seasoning, and you have a simple breakfast that provides just enough energy to fuel the day.
4. Nasi Lemak Bungkus
On almost every table, you will see packets of food such as Nasi Lemak and Mee Siam. Naturally, I had to try the Nasi Lemak. It came in a small packet, but wow, it was surprisingly satisfying. There is something about having a simple packet of Nasi Lemak for breakfast that feels quintessentially Malaysian.
5. Iced Coffee
And finally, the iced coffee. This is a must-have when you are at Toh Soon Cafe. It was strong, rich, and wonderfully kaw. One glass was definitely not enough for me!
Is Toh Soon Cafe Worth Visiting?
Yes!
In fact, I liked it enough to return twice during my recent stay in Penang.
Toh Soon Cafe may have a simple menu and a very traditional setting, but that is exactly what makes it charming. From the charcoal-toasted bread and half-boiled eggs to the Nasi Lemak bungkus and strong iced coffee, it offers the kind of nostalgic breakfast that makes you appreciate simple Malaysian food.
If you are exploring George Town and looking for traditional Penang food, wake up early and make your way to Toh Soon Cafe. Just be prepared for a queue, especially on weekends.
