Yes, you read that right! And you might wonder who would recommend duck Koay Teow Th’ng when you are in Penang? Well, apparently my friend would. And I am glad she did.

When my friend first recommended Loh Kei Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng, I was like, Seriously? But after trying it once, it has become one of my ultimate comfort foods; the kind of food I would happily sacrifice my sleep for and wake up early just to have.

When you try finding this plate, you’ll come across plenty of Loh Kei Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng signs around the area. But the one I fancy is the stall beside the State Chinese (Penang) Association. So, rather than searching around, just Waze or Grab to that location instead.

Depending on your luck, there may be a queue. When I visited on a weekday, I waited less than 10 minutes before being ushered to my table.

Once I was ushered to my table, I immediately ordered a bowl of duck Koay Teow Th’ng, accompanied by a bowl of fishballs and duck meat.

My portion when I was there the first time

Oh man, it was delicious. The broth was clear and comforting, yet packed with rich umami flavours. Every spoonful was satisfying, and it was exactly the kind of hearty bowl of noodle soup that makes you want to finish every last drop.

The fishballswere wonderfully bouncy, and I’m sure kids would love them too.

The duck meat, served on top of bean sprouts, was pretty average on its own. But together with the noodles, fishballs and that comforting broth, it complemented the overall dining experience nicely.

Absolutely yes!

Loh Kei Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng may not be the first dish that comes to mind when you think about Penang food, but sometimes the most unexpected recommendations turn out to be the ones you remember most.

For me, this is now one of those comfort foods in Penang worth waking up early for.
