When it comes to Chinese New Year, you wouldn't think twice about turning it down. Instead, you would welcome it with open arms because every dish symbolizes an abundance of good health, prosperity, happiness, and wealth, you name it.
Recently, I enjoyed attending a reunion dinner at one of the top-tier (ATAS) restaurants: Yun House, located in the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Upon entering the restaurant, I was wowed by the high ceilings, beautiful and neat table arrangement, and, I must say, the chairs were comfortable.
Flipping through the menu certainly made us ponder and think twice. Wow, it's expensive! The prices are listed per person, and for certain dishes like fish, the price is per portion. That portion serves only two to three people.
After spending about 10 minutes deliberating over the menu and doing some mental math, we decided to go with the Fortune Set, priced at RM468 per person. Yes, per person and not per table.
Here is what the Fortune Set included—get ready to salivate as the photos will do justice:
1. Appetizer — Marinated Scallop
(This was quite surprising. If the servers hadn't explained it to us, I would've thought it was jellyfish!)
2. Unagi with Black Truffle Yee Sang
3. Assorted Seafood Soup with Crab Roe
4. Golden Prawns with Spicy Wasabi Aioli and Prawn Toast with Thousand Island Dressing
5. Steamed Grouper with Fermented Bean and Spring Onion
6. Braised Sun-Dried Oyster with Black Mushroom and Sea Moss
7. Pan-Seared Glutinous Rice Bun
8. Cream of Mango with Pomelo and Snow Nest and Yun House Deep Fried Rice Cake with Yam and Sweet Potato
We thought it wasn’t enough, so we ordered a plate of Fragrant Fried Rice with Seafood in Spicy Scallop Sauce. And oh my, the fried rice was incredibly fragrant. Not oily, not overly seasoned, but the taste just emerged on its own, thanks to the fresh seafood.
Overall, I loved the Fortune Set. Every dish was perfectly cooked except for the Braised Sun-Dried Oyster with Black Mushroom and Sea Moss, which I found quite salty. If I were to choose my top 4 dishes, the ranking would be:
1. Unagi with Black Truffle Yee Sang
2. Assorted Seafood Soup with Crab Roe
3. Steamed Grouper with Fermented Bean and Spring Onion
4. Cream of Mango with Pomelo and Snow Nest
Ambiance: 5/5
Service:4/5
Food: Pork-free, Chinese cuisine
Price: $$$$$
Verdict: A must-try, especially the dishes I mentioned above, if you have the chance.
