Call me kiasu if you like, but this was my very first time discovering Steam Era at Genting Highlands — and honestly, I’m glad I did. From the outside, the restaurant looks fancy and premium, which definitely caught our attention. But what really pulled us in? The menu. More specifically, their signature pumpkin porridge.
This isn’t your typical porridge spot. At Steam Era, the dining concept is a little different — and quite brilliant.
Instead of starting with the porridge, you begin by selecting fresh seafood to steam. Here’s the twist: the juices and steam released during the cooking process drip down into the pumpkin porridge below, infusing it with rich, natural seafood flavours. So you’re essentially creating a wholesome, umami-packed porridge as you cook and enjoy your seafood.
First off, we kicked off our meal by choosing a variety of seafood, and every item did not disappoint.
1. Live prawns
They were incredibly fresh, sweet, and bouncy in texture. Just perfect.
2. Baby squid
Tender and flavorful.
3. Okra and meatballs
Nice side additions to balance out the meal.
4. Giant scallop (RM80 each)
This was the showstopper. It was massive — bigger than my palm — and beautifully juicy. After eating that, I was honestly so full I could’ve stopped right there!
After indulging in the seafood, it was finally time for the much-anticipated porridge. And let me tell you — it was worth the wait. The porridge was smooth, rich, and carried all the subtle sweetness and umami of the steamed seafood. Comforting, nourishing, and absolutely delicious.
On top of that, we ordered other dishes like the following, and they were all satisfying and delicious.
Would I Return?
Yes — without hesitation.
Not only for the unique concept and fresh ingredients, but also because I later found out that Steam Era has outlets in Kuala Lumpur, with their HQ located in Jalan Imbi. So even when I’m not in Genting, I can still get my fix.
If you’re looking for a warm, satisfying meal with a touch of novelty and a whole lot of flavor, Steam Era is definitely worth a visit. Come hungry — you won’t regret it!
