The Unexpected Reason I Keep Coming Back: Best Avocado Spots in Sandakan, Sabah

Believe it or not, one of the main reasons I would return to Sandakan isn’t just the seafood or local dishes. It’s the avocado.

Yes, really.

The avocado smoothies here are incredibly rich, creamy, and full of flavour. It’s something I didn’t expect, but it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip. If you’re an avocado lover, this is something you shouldn’t miss. I tried a few popular spots around town, and here’s my honest take:

1. Crowd 99 – Avocado Smoothie

Avocado Smoothie, Crowd 99 Sandakan

The avocado smoothie at Crowd 99 was undeniably satisfying; thick, creamy, and packed with flavour. However, they had run out of fresh avocado toppings during my visit, so the drink came plain. At RM20, it felt a little pricey for what was served. For that price point, I would have expected additional toppings like lai liu fah or even a scoop of ice cream to elevate the experience. Still, taste-wise, it didn’t disappoint.

2. Fruit World – Avocado Smoothie

Fruit World was noticeably busier when we visited, and it was a good sign. Their avocado smoothie was just as delicious, with a smooth and rich consistency. At RM14.50, it was more affordable compared to Crowd 99, making it a better value option overall. If you’re choosing between the two, this one gives you more bang for your buck.

3. Urban Cafe – Avocado Float Cake

Not a fan of smoothies? No problem.

Head over to Urban Cafe and try their avocado float cake instead. The cake had a perfectly balanced flavour. It was not overly sweet, with just the right amount of avocado richness. It’s light, creamy, and surprisingly addictive. This is the kind of dessert that makes you fall in love with avocado all over again.

Is Avocado in Sandakan Worth It?

Absolutely, yes.

Sandakan may not be the first place that comes to mind for avocado-based treats, but it definitely delivers. Whether it’s a creamy smoothie or a delicate avocado cake, these simple indulgences made a lasting impression on me.

And honestly, it’s one of the reasons I would come back again.
