Unlike cities like Kuala Lumpur, where supper often means heading to a bustling mamak stall, Sandakan offers a much quieter nightlife. Even during my stay, I found myself turning in early or heading back to the hotel sooner than expected.
But that doesn’t mean the nights are boring; you just experience them differently.
With limited nightlife options, supper becomes the highlight of the evening. And sometimes, the simplest dishes turn out to be the most memorable.
For me, it was all about grilled chicken wings and pan-fried dumplings; a combination that completely blew me away.
1. Grilled Chicken Wings
The grilled chicken wings were pure comfort food. Smoky, slightly charred on the outside, and juicy on the inside, they paired perfectly with a cold drink, whether it’s a can of beer or something non-alcoholic.
2. Pan-fried dumplings
Then came the pan-fried dumplings, which were the real surprise. Crispy on the outside and packed with flavour on the inside, each bite had a punch of fragrant onions that made them incredibly addictive.
All in all, supper in Sandakan may not come with bright lights or late-night crowds, but it has its own charm. It’s slower, simpler, and somehow more comforting, and the kind of night where good food and quiet moments take centre stage.
If you’re visiting Sandakan and wondering what to do at night, don’t expect a vibrant nightlife scene. Instead, embrace the calm and treat yourself to a satisfying supper. Sometimes, all you need is a plate of grilled wings, some crispy dumplings, and a peaceful night to end the day right.
