Despite launching in early 2021, Kanbe Ramen still gains so much craze and splash by being one of the must-try ramens in KL. The queue starts before the restaurant opens its doors. We reached about 11am (the time when the restaurant opens), and still, we got to queue for another 45 minutes before we were ushered to our seats.
Like a typical Japanese restaurant, it is small, packed, and noisy. They have an open kitchen; hence, I find it a bit warm and stuffy especially when there are so many people in a restaurant.
The menu is rather simple yet complicated as you can customize the bowl of noodles based on your liking such as flavors, toppings, soup base, and, etc. While there are only two choices of noodles which are either ramen or tsukemen (also known as ‘dipping ramen’), I find it rather hard to choose. Both look good and I ended up going with Ramen.
Plenty of customizations and this was what I picked:
Ramen choice, Kuro flavor, normal soup base, normal porky oil, normal garlic base, chashu pork, both green and white negi, normal black fungus, medium kanbe homemade secret sauce, normal firmness noodle, and an extra flavor egg. Wow, that’s why I meant it is complicated.
By the way, Kuro flavor means black pork bone soup that uses squid ink, mixed with charred garlic and flavoured vegetables.
Was it worth the wait?
The ramen was so good! The first few spoons were heavenly. My bowl of ramen comes with springy, firm noodles in pork bone broth, and it is definitely one of the best ramen in town.
The portion of noodles is just nice, and please don’t add noodles even if you are a big eater. The reason being is that you will tend to get ‘jelak’ since the soup base is made with 100% pork bone and it is cooked for 48 hours, giving an intense richness in every sip, so it wouldn’t taste good once it turns cold.
We ordered some side dishes like the fried chicken and dumplings, but nah, I suggest you just go with their signature dishes.
