Before entering the shop, you must first place your order and make payment. Once that’s done, you head inside to find a table, with a buzzer provided to alert you when your order is ready. It was the second day since the store opened! The balloons lining the entrance of the café caught my attention as I was having dinner at a nearby restaurant. Seeing how brightly lit the café was, with diners walking in and carrying bags of bread, I told myself I had to check this place out.
Stepping inside, I immediately felt a sense of calm. The café proudly claims to be famous for its soft Japanese buns, so I wandered around, exploring the variety of bread displayed on trays and the beautiful cakes stationed near the counter, teasing my eyes.
There were a couple of signature breads, and I decided to buy them like a champion. Each bread or pastry costs around RM10, and before I knew it, I had spent close to RM90—including some drinks.
So, what’s my take?
1. Signature Croissant Egg Tarts
Aesthetically, they look beautiful. The taste isn’t too sweet, which I appreciate. However, I find them quite oily. By the time I had finished a piece, my fingers were covered in a layer of oil.
2. Seaweed Chicken Floss Puff
Wow, this is good! Peer pressure definitely played a role—so many people were choosing it, so I did too. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. Soft, fragrant, and coated with a layer of chicken floss and seaweed—this is my new favorite.
3. Sponge Cake
This cake costs around RM13.90. Soft and fluffy—I've used these words a lot in this post because they perfectly describe the bread here.
4. Butter Rice Cake
Oh, this is another favorite! Chewy and moist, just the way I like it.
5. Mochi Pudding
Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. I found it a bit odd.
6. Mango Pudding Cake
Again, not to my liking. The mangoes were quite sour, and overall, the eating experience wasn’t great. The soft bread kept falling apart, and the pudding itself was rather bland.
So, that’s my take on the bread and cakes I tried at 65 Ondo Kuchai Lama.
Will I return?
Yes—to get my favorite bread and, perhaps, try something new. It's been a while since we had a proper dining experience. As the month of August was a celebration month for us, we decided to pamper ourselves by treating our tummies to some authentic yet delicious Japanese food.
