Top 5 Must Visit Places in Switzerland (especially for first-timer)

Switzerland is stunningly beautiful. Not only were my eyes captivated by its beauty, but my soul and heart felt a deep sense of warmth, peace, and immense gratitude for the breathtaking landscapes. I recently spent about 10 days in Switzerland, truly living like a local. I'll share more about that later, but first, here are some must-visit places that I explored.

1. Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland

I spent three days in Zermatt, and it was not nearly enough. I recommend staying at least four days and three nights to fully experience the magic. Spend one day on the scenic route to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (CHF 95.00) and the other day via Gornergrat route via train. My biggest wish was to see the Matterhorn up close, so I had to choose either these two routes which I ended up taking the journey to the highest peak via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise route where it is at an airy of 3,883 meters of altitude as well as stopping at Trockener Steg station. There, I witnessed the magnificent Matterhorn as well as visiting the Glacier Palace. Oh, did you know that I was so close to Italy —just a few steps away! The temperature was chilly -20°C, but the views were absolutely worth it. It was snowing during our visit, which added to the winter wonderland charm.

One tip here: before you decide to head up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, do take a look at Zermatt’s webcams where you can see numerous live streams of the peak, which gives you a complete all-round picture of each area. The weather will provide important information to help you plan your activities there.

2. Bern

Bern, Switzerland

Bern Cathedral, Switzerland

As the capital city of Switzerland, Bern offers a delightful stroll through its historic old town. We visited during the Christmas season, so the city was buzzing with festive energy and Christmas markets. We even visited Bern Cathedral, which felt surreal and peaceful. Sitting in a nearby park, watching families and couples enjoy their time together, served as a beautiful reminder to slow down and appreciate life.

3. Zurich

Zurich

You can't miss Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland. It's bustling with shops and offices, but what stood out to us was the stunning Zurich Lake, where you can see the Swiss Alps against a clear blue sky. We also visited Albert Einstein’s university, it's vast, and I even got lost inside! Despite that, I enjoyed the vibrant school environment and seeing students’ work.

4. Mount Titlis at Engelberg

Lake in Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis, Switzerland

After experiencing the Matterhorn, exploring more of the Swiss Alps was a must. On local recommendations, we headed to Mount Titlis. It was breathtaking! It's best to go early to avoid the crowds. Take the cable car up, and once you arrive, you'll be mesmerized by the surrounding mountains. Use special telescopes that name each peak. I spent a day there, soaking in the views and savoring a hot chocolate.

5. Lucerne

Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne is another beautiful destination. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side, and it was quite gloomy, so we couldn't see Mount Pilatus shining above the lake. However, we walked across the iconic Chapel Bridge and explored the Christmas markets, filled with delicious food and festive cheer. Check this video on the market in Bern.

Local Activities

Remember I mentioned earlier that I live like a Swiss? Well, during my time in Switzerland, I engaged in various local activities such as:

1. Hiking in the cold weather

2. Christmas tree shopping in theforest

3. Eating raclette cheese like achampion

4. Local shopping in the village

5. Playing games at night

Overall, it was a fun time in Switzerland. Till today, I do miss the people there, the weather, the pace, the vibrant of each town, the food…and you name it.
