While strolling around the IJM area in Sandakan, we stumbled upon Chef Tam Restaurant, a humble corner shop that immediately caught our attention.
What stood out? The crowd.
Seeing flocks of locals dining there was enough reason for us to stop and give it a try. After all, a busy restaurant is usually a good sign when you’re searching for authentic food. We decided to try a variety of dishes and even did a mini comparison with another popular spot, Ocean King Seafood Restaurant.
1. Sweet and Sour Fish (Comparison Dish)
We couldn’t resist comparing the sweet and sour fish here with the one we had at Ocean King Seafood Restaurant. The verdict?
While Chef Tam’s version was decent, Ocean King Seafood Restaurant’s sweet and sour fish had a stronger, more balanced flavour and was overall more satisfying.
2. Braised Pork Ribs with Peanuts (Must-Try)
One of the standout dishes here was the braised pork ribs with peanuts.
The pork was soft, tender, and infused with a rich, aromatic sauce that made each bite incredibly satisfying. The combination of flavours was comforting and addictive. It was definitely a highlight of the meal.
3. Claypot Seafood (Highly Recommended)
Another dish that impressed us was the claypot seafood. Packed with deshelled prawns, squid, and fish, the dish was flavourful and well-cooked. The claypot added an extra depth of aroma, making it a must-order if you’re dining here.
4. Tofu with Crab Meat (Could Be Better)
Not every dish stood out, though. The tofu with crab meat sauce was slightly underwhelming. The tofu itself was a bit bland. If they use egg tofu or homemade tofu, that could have elevated the dish significantly.
5. Kangkung Belacan (Average)
The kangkung belacan was decent but nothing particularly memorable. It was average compared to the other dishes we tried.
All in all, Chef Tam Restaurant has a casual, no-frills setting, but the steady flow of locals speaks volumes about its popularity. It’s the kind of place you visit for hearty, comforting dishes rather than ambience.
Is Chef Tam Restaurant Worth It?
Yes — especially for selected dishes.
While not every dish impressed, the braised pork ribs and claypot seafood were definite highlights. If you’re in the IJM area and want to explore local favourites beyond the usual spots, Chef Tam Restaurant is worth a visit.
