Tong Sum Desserts Review - A Hidden Gem for Chinese BBQ Skewers in Subang Jaya

When a friend suggested Tong Sum Desserts as a dinner spot, I was admittedly confused. “Desserts?” I asked, just to make sure we were heading to the right place. As it turns out, despite its name, Tong Sum Desserts in Subang Jaya is not just about sweet treats. Hidden within an industrial area, this casual eatery serves some surprisingly delicious Chinese-style skewers, dumplings and light comfort food that keep regulars coming back for more.

In fact, after one visit, it wasn’t hard to understand why. The menu is relatively straightforward. Whether you’re craving a comforting hotpot meal or simply looking for skewers to pair with good company, Tong Sum Desserts has something for everyone.

Since this was my friend’s go-to spot, I left the ordering entirely in her hands, and thankfully, she knew exactly what to order.

The Skewers Are the Real Star Here

If there’s one thing you must try at Tong Sum Desserts, it’s the skewers.

We ordered a variety of them, including Grilled Pork Belly Skewers, Grilled Pork Belly Ham Skewers, Grilled Pork Belly Enoki Mushroom Skewers, Grilled Lamb Skewers, Grilled Squid Tentacles, and Grilled Corn.

Every skewer arrived beautifully grilled with a smoky aroma and generous seasoning. The pork belly skewers were juicy and flavourful, while the lamb skewers had just the right amount of char without being overly gamey.

Another standout dish was the Grilled Scallops with Garlic Vermicelli. The scallops were fresh and sweet, while the fragrant garlic and vermicelli soaked up all the savoury juices. Every bite delivered a satisfying combination of sweetness, umami and smokiness.

To balance out all the grilled food, we added a serving of pork and chive dumplings. Filled generously with pork and chives, these dumplings were juicy, comforting, and packed with flavour. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the most satisfying, and this was certainly one of them.

One thing I enjoyed about Tong Sum Desserts was the relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant operates primarily in an outdoor setting, creating a casual dining experience that feels more like hanging out with friends than dining in a traditional restaurant. There are no fancy decorations or elaborate service. Instead, you get good food, good music playing in the background, and a laid-back environment that’s perfect for unwinding after work.

Would I return?

Without hesitation—yes.
