Over the past year, Nasi Lemak Shop has become one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing local restaurant chains. Social media has been buzzing with reviews, food videos and recommendations, and it seems like everyone has been talking about it. Curious to find out if it really lives up to the hype, I’ve visited several of its outlets, including Setia Alam, Bandar Utama and Bangsar South.

After multiple visits, here’s my honest take. The Bandar Utama outlet, which serves as the brand’s headquarters, is usually packed during lunch hours. It’s not uncommon to see customers queuing for a table.

The good news is that the other outlets are generally less crowded, making them a better option if you want to avoid the lunch rush.

The restaurant offers a clean, modern setting while staying true to what Malaysians love most: good nasi lemak paired with a generous selection of side dishes, including: (1)Crispy Fried Chicken (2) Beef Rendang (3) Curry Cockles (4) Sambal Squid and other classic Malaysian favourites. Whether you’re dining alone or with family, there’s enough variety to suit different tastes.

Our favourite remains the Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak.

The chicken is juicy on the inside with beautifully crispy skin, making it incredibly satisfying with every bite. The sambal strikes a nice balance too. It isn’t overly spicy or excessively sweet, allowing the flavours of the coconut rice and chicken to shine.

One of the things we appreciate most is that diners can request extra sambal at no additional cost when eating in. For sambal lovers, that’s definitely a bonus.

Besides nasi lemak, we also enjoyed the Fajar Rojak.

The portion is admittedly on the smaller side considering the price, but it’s refreshing and provides a nice contrast to the richness of the nasi lemak. The fresh fruits and vegetables help balance the meal, especially if, like me, you’ve been craving nasi lemak more often than you probably should!

This is something I don’t usually mention in restaurant reviews, but the drinks deserve a special shout-out. Instead of serving iced drinks in regular plastic cups or glasses, Nasi Lemak Shop uses stainless steel tumblers that keep beverages colder for longer.

Whether it’s Iced Coffee, Teh Ais or Milo Ais, every sip feels extra refreshing after a plate of nasi lemak. It’s a small detail, but one that enhances the overall dining experience.

Would I return?

Yes, but probably not as often as before.

There was a point when I visited Nasi Lemak Shop three times in a single week, and by the end of it, I needed a short break from nasi lemak altogether! That says more about my obsession than the restaurant itself.

Overall, Nasi Lemak Shop delivers consistently good nasi lemak with quality ingredients, crispy fried chicken and a comfortable dining environment. While there are many great nasi lemak spots across the Klang Valley, it’s easy to understand why this brand has built such a loyal following in a relatively short time.
