It’s been quite some time since my last visit to Dataran Merdeka, and this trip finally gave me the perfect reason to return, not just to admire the beautifully restored Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, but also to experience one of Kuala Lumpur’s newest and most unique tea destinations, Tannin Hill.

Following the refurbishment of this iconic heritage building, the area has become a vibrant attraction for both tourists and locals. Beyond its rich history and stunning architecture, visitors can now enjoy thoughtfully curated dining experiences that blend heritage with modern flavours.

One of the newest additions is Tannin Hill, which relocated from Jalan Ipoh to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad less than a year ago. If you appreciate tea as much as I do, this is more than just a café, but it’s an immersive tea experience.

As someone who enjoys drinking tea, I thought I already knew the basics of brewing a good cup. Apparently, I was wrong.

During the tea appreciation session, I learned that many premium Chinese teas should be steeped for only about eight seconds during the first infusion. Leaving the leaves in hot water for too long can overpower the delicate flavours and aromas, resulting in bitterness instead of balance.

It was a simple lesson, but one that completely changed the way I’ll prepare tea at home. Every tea we sampled had its own distinctive aroma, body and aftertaste, making the tasting experience both educational and enjoyable.

Well, most people have heard of nitro cold brew coffee. But have you heard of nitro cold brew tea? That was something entirely new to me.

Tannin Hill offers four different nitro tea creations: (1) Nitro Emerald Push, (2) Nitro Jasmine Tea, (3) Nitro Mountain Mist, and (4) Nitro Black Gold

Served on tap, the nitrogen creates a silky-smooth texture with tiny cascading bubbles that give the tea a creamy mouthfeel without adding milk or sugar.

My personal favourite was Nitro Jasmine Tea. It was floral, fragrant, and incredibly refreshing, making it the perfect drink on a warm afternoon.

You see, Tannin Hill doesn’t just serve tea. It incorporates tea into its food as well, creating dishes that are both comforting and full of character. For instance, Shoyu Chicken Chazuke. This quickly became one of my favourite dishes.

Steamed rice is paired with tender shoyu chicken before fragrant Da Hong Pao tea is gently poured over the bowl. Rather than diluting the flavours, the tea enhances the savoury richness of the chicken and rice, creating a comforting, umami-filled dish that’s surprisingly light yet deeply satisfying.

Next is Eggy Melt Rice Cubes. Perfect as a sharing appetiser, these crispy rice cubes delivered a delightful contrast of textures. Crispy on the outside and soft within, each bite was rich, savoury and wonderfully satisfying. Another favorite of mine is Tempeh Mix. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this dish as much as I did. The tempeh was beautifully prepared with just the right balance of seasoning, transforming a humble ingredient into something unexpectedly addictive.

To wrap up the meal, you can’t miss their dessert. If there’s one dessert you shouldn’t miss, it’s the Oolong Ice Cream.

The tea aroma is wonderfully pronounced, giving the ice cream a fragrant and elegant flavour that’s both creamy and refreshing. It’s lightly sweetened, allowing the natural characteristics of the oolong tea to shine through.

Will I return?

The calm ambience makes it an ideal place to slow down, enjoy a thoughtfully brewed cup of tea and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
