If there’s one local dessert that truly represents Sandakan, it has to be the famous UFO tart. This small but iconic pastry is said to have originated from Sandakan itself, making it a must-try when visiting this beautiful coastal town. Naturally, it makes perfect sense to taste it where it all began.
So we did exactly that. After some research, two names consistently came up as the top places to try UFO tarts:
San Da Gen Kopitiam
Kedai Kopi Gold Crown
As true food adventurers, we decided to try both and compare them side by side.
But, first, what is UFO Tart?
UFO tart is a local Sandakan pastry consisting of a soft tart base topped with a light, creamy custard layer. It’s simple in appearance but surprisingly addictive in taste — creamy, slightly sweet, and best enjoyed fresh. Despite its simplicity, it has become one of the most well-known local snacks in Sandakan.
1. UFO Tart at San Da Gen Kopitiam
At San Da Gen Kopitiam, the UFO tart comes with a thinner tart base and a generous layer of cream on top. The texture combination makes it incredibly enjoyable; one bite and you immediately understand why it’s so popular. The highlights are thin, soft base with a generous creamy topping, and light. It is RM3.50 per piece.
The balance between the crust and cream makes it easy to finish more than one without feeling overwhelmed. This version feels lighter and more refined.
2. UFO Tart at Kedai Kopi Gold Crown
At Kedai Kopi Gold Crown, the UFO tart takes a slightly different approach. Here, the base is thicker and softer, giving it a more bread-like texture. The filling is also noticeably sweeter compared to San Da Gen’s version. The highlights are thicker, softer base, and it is slightly sweeter in overall taste. With a slightly heavier texture, this has a more dessert-like feel. This version feels more indulgent and rich, especially for those who prefer sweeter desserts.
Which UFO Tart is Better?
Both versions have their own charm, but they offer very different experiences.
San Da Gen Kopitiam → lighter, creamier, more balanced
Gold Crown → sweeter, thicker, more dessert-heavy
Nonetheless, my preference is San Da Gen Kopitiam UFO Tart. The thinner base and higher cream ratio make it more enjoyable and less overwhelming. It’s the kind of dessert you can easily go for seconds without feeling too heavy.
All in all, trying the UFO tart in Sandakan is a must for any food lover. It’s not just a dessert, but it’s part of the city’s food identity.
