Restaurant Mei Mei Sandakan: Local Noodle Spot You Shouldn't Miss

If you’re exploring Sandakan food, one thing you’ll quickly realise is that some of the best meals come from humble, no-frills eateries.

One of those hidden gems is Restaurant Mei Mei, a local noodle spot that consistently draws in customers for its comforting and flavourful dishes.

A quick heads-up before you visit: the staff may come across as a little unfriendly at first. However, this is mainly because the restaurant runs with limited manpower and a fast-paced service style. A little patience goes a long way here, and the food is absolutely worth the wait.

We decided to go all out and try several of their signature noodle dishes. Here’s how each one stood out:

1. Kah Heong Seafood Noodles (Soup Version)

This was easily one of the highlights of the meal.

The Kah Heong seafood noodles come with a rich, flavourful broth and a unique addition of yam that adds natural sweetness and depth to the soup. Every spoonful of broth is comforting, while the noodles absorb the savoury seafood flavour beautifully. It’s the kind of dish that makes the waiting time completely worth it.

2. Salted Vegetable Fish Noodles

Next up was the salted vegetable fish noodles, and this one was incredibly appetising.

The slightly tangy and savoury salted vegetable broth pairs perfectly with the fresh fish slices. It’s light yet flavourful, making it easy to finish the entire bowl without feeling too heavy.

3. Dry Noodles with Ton Yum Broth

For something more punchy, we tried the dry noodles paired with tom yum broth.

This dish delivered a bold, tangy, and slightly spicy flavour profile. The dry noodles soaked up the sauce well, while the accompanying broth added an extra layer of richness to the meal. A solid choice if you prefer stronger, more vibrant flavours.

One interesting thing we noticed during our food journey in Sandakan is that many noodle dishes are often paired with bee hoon (rice vermicelli). It seems to be a local staple, and honestly, it works beautifully. The texture of bee hoon absorbs the broth well and enhances the overall flavour of the dish. Simple, but satisfying.

Will I Return Again?

Yes, especially for noodle lovers.

While the service may feel a little rough around the edges, the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Each bowl is packed with flavour, comfort, and a strong local touch that reflects Sandakan’s food culture. If you’re in Sandakan and craving something warm, hearty, and authentic, Restaurant Mei Mei is definitely worth a visit.

Key Notes

1. Do I need to make a reservation before heading there?

Walk-ins will do. If the place is packed, you just need to wait then. Suggest going there early as this eatery is rather popular among the locals, too.

2. Does it offer other dishes?

Mainly, they serve noodle-based dishes, but they have a variety of soup broths to choose from.
