If you’re a steak lover in Petaling Jaya, there’s one name that keeps popping up among locals - Honest Butcher by Chef Nickt.
Tucked away in an industrial area, this spot isn’t the easiest to find… but trust me, that’s part of the adventure.
When a friend recommended it, I didn’t hesitate to gather a group and try it out. And honestly? That was the best decision. Dining here with a bigger group means you get to try more dishes and split the bill (always a win).
Fair warning, this is a hidden gem in the truest sense.
There’s no obvious signage, and the restaurant sits in an industrial area that might make you second-guess your GPS. But here’s how you know you’ve arrived. Just look for a purple building and spot the golden bull statue at the entrance. That’s your cue — you’re in the right place.
Upon stepping inside, the contrast is immediate. From the quiet, industrial exterior, you’re suddenly welcomed by friendly, attentive staff and a lively, buzzing dining crowd. It was surprisingly full when we visited although it was on weekday, so reservations are highly recommended, especially weekends.
What to Order: Must-Try Dishes
We tried quite a spread, and here are the standout dishes you absolutely shouldn’t miss:
1. Steak
We had quite a fair bit of the different kinds of steak, and I just couldn't remember all the names. Nonetheless, all were cooked medium — and wow. It was juicy, tender, and packed with flavour. Every bite felt like it melted instantly. Definitely one of those “close your eyes and savour it” moments.
2. A5 Miyazaki
Another premium cut that deserves the spotlight. Compared to the earlier, it is slightly more fatty layers and has even softer texture with rich, buttery finish. Honestly, choosing between the two is nearly impossible — both are exceptional in their own way.
3. Salmon Sashimi
You might come for the steak, but don’t skip the sashimi. Fresh, clean, and surprisingly good as it is infused with sake. It proves that this place isn’t just a one-trick pony.
4. Gambas Al Ajillo
5. Garlic Bonito Escargots
Don't be fooled by how it looks like as it is about to make a lasting impression to you once you try it.
6. Truffle Unagi Sushi
This was legitly delicious. Would have eaten more of this but got to keep the tummy for something else.
6. Homemade Tiramisu
This is a perfect ending to the meal. The tiramisu had a well-balanced sweetness and a subtle bitterness from the coffee. It is light, indulgent, and satisfying — just the way a dessert should be.
What didn’t wow us was:
Unagi Claypot Rice
Engawa Claypot Rice
Omakase Cold Capellini
These are among their specialties, and we tried both. While they were nicely done and flavourful, they felt a bit overpriced for what is essentially claypot rice. If you’re asking whether it’s worth ordering, I’d say save your stomach space for the steak and tapas instead.
Here’s something I didn’t expect; you can actually buy their meats to take home. They offer various steak cuts and packaged meats. So if you fall in love with their steak (and you probably will), you can recreate the experience in your own kitchen.
Will I return?
Absolutely, but with a few notes: (1) Come in a group for the best experience, (2) Make a reservation, and (3) Focus on their steak and signature dishes
Ambient: 3/5
Price: $$$$
Food: Steak
Service: 4/5

Key Notes
1. Is Honest Butcher hard to find?
Just follow the Waze to Honest Butcher. Once it said that you have arrived, you would probably lost for a minute as there's no clear signage and it is located in an industrial area. So, look for the purple building and a golden bull statue.
2. What is the best dish at Honest Butcher?
Their steak such as A5 Wagyu steak and Blood Steak are the top highlights.
3. Do I need a reservation?
Yes, highly recommended.
