Top 5 Must-Eat Food in Kuala Lumpur

Most of the time, we tend to take things for granted and always perceive that the grass is always greener on the other side. “Wow, the beef in Korea is better than in Malaysia.”, “London’s shopping is so much fun and has more variety than Malaysia”, “Taiwan has lots of nice street food”, and so on and so forth.

Well, I guess this is true sometimes. Thanks to the Internet and global influence, we tend to look out rather than look in our very own country. The past two months were the time that I decided to discover the gems in my very own nation, Malaysia. And that means I have to start in this beautiful city that everyone knows, Kuala Lumpur,

I chanced upon a lot of great food and places throughout my staycation in Kuala Lumpur. And these are the top 5 must-try food whenever you are in Kuala Lumpur.

1.   Mun Wah Hokkien Mee

2.   Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice

3.   Sek Yuen Restaurant

4.   Come True Cafe at Starhill

5.   TG’s Bistro

Mun Wah Hokkien Mee

Full with wok hey Hokkien Mee

Open during dinner time, this shop is pretty small and it can accommodate around 5 tables only. The cooks are well experienced and their Hokkien Mee is full of wok hey. Comes with chunks of pork lard, you can also opt for side dishes like fried beancurd, etc.

Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice

Michelin Guide Claypot Chicken Rice

Being one of the restaurants that got the Michelin Guide 2023 recognition, there is no doubt that people are flocking in to try their Claypot chicken rice. Using charcoal to fire the dishes, be sure to be there early to avoid long queues. There are a lot of different kinds of Claypot chicken rice and my favorite is the Chicken Drumstick Claypot Rice which takes about 20 minutes to cook. And let me tell you, it’s worth the wait.

Sek Yuen Restaurant

Known for Cantonese dishes like signature Pei pa duck

Known for its Cantonese way of cooking style, Sek Yuen Restaurant has been around for several decades. Used to be only one shop, it has now expanded to multiple outlets. Despite that, the taste is still consistent and the staff there is so friendly. Signature Pei Pa Duck is one of the must-order dishes along with Kwai Fa Chi. There are lots of other dishes that you can opt for, but before that, please make sure you make your reservation first as the restaurants are always packed and crowded.

Come True Cafe at Starhill

Soufflé is soft, jiggly

A Taiwanese cafe that has a perfect spot in Starhill as it gives the diners a view of the Pavilion. Diners can choose to sit indoors, in an air conditioning setting, or sit outdoors, overlooking the busy Bukit Bintang road or Pavilion. Known for their coffee and soufflé pancake, be sure to try them out as they are very unique in their way.

TG’s Bistro

Roti Tisu is of our favourites

The roti canai especially roti planta and roti telur bawang were surprisingly delicious. Roti Tisu was always the one that caught our attention as every diner would definitely order one, either for Instagram or for snacking. Teh Halia was a nice call to pair with them.

Happy trying them!
