Netflix: Upstream

Wow, this movie really captured my attention. I was planning to watch some dramas to destress but this Chinese movie piqued my interest. I decided to give it a go, and oh man, it is incredibly relatable. While watching the movie, a lot of 'what if' questions started to pop up:

1. What if we lose our jobs like the lead character (Gao ZiLei)?

2. What if we are made redundant in our job?

3. What if there's no job available for us?

4. What if we can't provide a better education for our children?

5. What if we can't afford our parents' expenses?

The more I thought about it, the more fearful I became. Truthfully, I believe many of us have been pretty comfortable living our lives. But sometimes, when things go south, we're left with limited choices. Like the male lead character (Gao ZiLei) who was a programmer and head of a department, losing his job just like that. At the age of 45, he hit rock bottom and had to start over.

During times like these, when any job is available, you will take it. Imagine sending 1,000 resumes and yet no call returned. He then joined the gig economy, becoming a delivery man.

This gives us a new perspective on how being a delivery person is. It is a service line where they face customers, vendors, peers, and bosses. There are many tasks to be done within a limited timeframe, from understanding their surroundings area well to building good relationships with vendors, being humble and kind to peers, and much more. They have to brave the weather, whether sunny or rainy, all because they just want to make ends meet.

So, my dear readers, watch this movie on Netflix if you haven't because these are the three main key takeaways:

1. Always be humble and kind. You never know what the other person is experiencing, nor their workload stress and pressure. Don't look down on people just because you are superior to others.

2. Together, we make it better. Yes, we may compete among peers for better improvement but don't take it to the extreme. We are all on the same page, trying to make ends meet. So, let's not turn them into rivals; together we make it better. This applies to the family context as well. When one falls apart, everyone can play their roles to rebuild. Like his wife, who teaches drum classes and works in a nail salon instead of being a full-time homemaker, and his father, who didn't want to burden his son and took charge of his own life.

3.Leverage your strengths.Regardless of where you go, leverage your strengths. Like the main lead (Gao ZiLei), who, despite being in the delivery line, used his programming skills to create a route master that benefitted all the riders. He was not stingy with his knowledge and eventually, a big company noticed his capabilities.
