Ipoh has undergone remarkable changes since my last visit. The weather was extremely hot, but the city was bustling with visitors. Instead of sticking to the usual spots for chicken rice and Ipoh Hor Fun, I decided to explore new places, thanks to the recommendations from my friends and locals.
1. Ipoh Hor Fun at Weng Fatt
Start your day with a delicious bowl of Ipoh Hor Fun at Weng Fatt. Instead of shredded chicken, opt for steamed chicken. The Hor Fun is smooth and silky, and the broth deserves the highest praise. It's no wonder every diner finishes the whole bowl of noodles and soup.
2. San Ma Chicken Rice
For lunch or dinner, head over to San Ma Chicken Rice. Unlike the typical Lou Wong Chicken Rice, San Ma always has a queue, with waiting times around 30-40 minutes. The service is excellent, and the food is worth the wait. The chicken is soft, the bean sprouts are fat and juicy, and the rice is perfectly cooked. Don't miss out on the chicken feet, it's a true delicacy!
3. Choong Kee Pokok Besar Restaurant
Next, make a stop at Choong Kee Pokok Besar Restaurant. There’s an array of yong tao foo to choose from, perfect for a snack or to pack and bring home to Kuala Lumpur. It's an ideal spot for brunch or teatime.
4. Patisserie Boutique
Located next to Plan B Ipoh, Patisserie Boutique, this quaint café is a must-visit. As soon as you step inside, you'll be wowed by the cakes counter. One standout treat is the signature burnt cheesecake. The creamy cheese and the cake itself are simply heavenly.
5. STG Tea House
If you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy spot to unwind and relax, head to STGTea House. While the tea time set is popular, I personally recommend scones and pizza over it. The food served with the tea set is rather modest, but the overall ambiance makes it a great place to chill.
6. Restaurant Sin Hup Kee
For dinner, Restaurant Sin Hup Kee is a top choice. Make an early reservation to avoid waiting for at least an hour. The food, a typical Chinese cuisine, offers a nostalgic journey to home-cooked flavors.
7. Ming Moon Restaurant
If you prefer something light for dinner, Ming Moon Restaurant offers excellent dim sum in an air-conditioned environment. Highlights include the fried radish cake, char siew bao, and siew mai.
