If you’re looking for Nyonya food in Melaka, Kam Cheng is a name that often comes up in recommendations. During my recent trip to Melaka, many people suggested that I try Kam Cheng, so I decided to see if it lived up to the hype. Having previously dined at Heritage Flavours, which I truly enjoyed, my expectations were naturally higher when visiting Kam Cheng.
Upon entering Kam Cheng, I was immediately impressed by the restaurant’s ambiance. The cozy and comfortable setting felt very much like dining in a traditional Peranakan (Nyonya) house. The interior design added charm to the overall experience and made the meal more enjoyable. The menu was straightforward, making it easy for us to place our orders.
While the ambiance was excellent, the food was a mixed experience.
1. Steamed Okra with Sambal Belacan
This was hands down the best dish of the meal. The okra was fresh, and the sambal belacan was well-balanced and flavorful. It worked perfectly as an appetizer and truly stood out among the dishes we ordered.
2. Pork Curry
The pork curry paired nicely with white rice and was comforting.
3. Signature Pork Dish
Unfortunately, the signature pork dish was disappointing. The meat was quite dry, and the fat portion of the pork belly was noticeably thicker, making it slightly jelak. This dish did not meet expectations, especially given its “signature” status.
4. Pie Tee
Having tasted excellent pie tee before, my expectations were high. Sadly, Kam Cheng’s pie tee was only average and couldn’t compare to the ones I’ve had from a home chef with over 30 years of experience.
To wrap up the meal, we tried the dessert Kam Cheng is known for. It was beautifully presented, and while the taste was decent, it didn’t leave a lasting impression.
Overall, Kam Cheng offers a lovely ambiance and a comfortable dining experience, making it a pleasant place to enjoy Nyonya cuisine in Melaka. However, while some dishes were enjoyable—especially the steamed okra with sambal belacan—the overall food quality was inconsistent.
