When you had the chance to wear a tourist hat in your capital city, you should make use of it. This rings true when I had my recent staycation in Kuala Lumpur. Instantly, I turned on my foodie hat and seized the opportunity to explore and discover the food gem.
One of the places that managed to steal my attention was Kedai Kopi Dan Makanan Hong Lai at Setapak. Known for its fiery charcoal Yuet Gong Hor (Moonlight Kuey Teow) and Hokkien Mee, I decided to pay a visit on a Monday night, for my dinner.
I reached there around 810pm and man, the queue was long. It was a Monday and I thought that it wouldn’t have many people. Waited for close to 10 mins to get a table and another 40 minutes to get the food on my table. By the time I had my so-called dinner, it was already 9pm.
I didn’t even get a plate of their snacks, which was Fried Fish Cake because it was sold out.
1. Yuet Gong Hor (Moonlight Kuey Teow)
The hero dish for the day! The gooey egg looked good amidst the Kuey Teow. Without wasting much time, we dug in and mixed the egg with noodles. It was a similar act like tossing yee sang. Once the egg had blended in, the noodles had a new, refreshed look with a shiny and slippery surface. And voila, it was one of the best noodles that I ever had. Usually, lots of hawker stalls would bring out the smell through lots of pork lards but for this, the pork lards were very minimal and it was filled with so much of wok hei.
2. Charcoal Hokkien Mee
Slurrppp!!! So good and yummy! It was not that oily, probably because it didn’t use much pork lards like what others use and I believe the elders would love it.
3. Cantonese Yin Yong
This was a little disappointing. The broth was too watery and the taste was pretty bland.
Overall, it was a good treat for a Monday evening. It would be good to visit that place if you have some time to kill but if you are in rush, I reckon not to.
Parking is quite a nightmare. As this shop faces the main road, there are many cars. Usually, the patrons would just park at the roadside and I guess that’s the only way. But if you are worried about your car, you can park behind the shops or the small roads between shops.
Ambiance: For families with kids, best to takeaway. For friends gatherings, if your friends are not fussy, you can have it there.
Price: $$
Food: Non-halal, Chinese
Service: Moderate
Verdict: Must try Yuet Gong Hor and Hokkien Mee
