Just about an hour from Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Ketam feels like stepping into a different world. There are no cars, no traffic lights - just wooden houses on stilts, narrow walkways, and the constant rhythm of island life, and some of the freshest seafood you'll find in Selangor.
If you are planning a quick escape from the city, this charming fishing village makes for a perfect day trip. From cycling through quiet lanes to indulging in local seafood, here's a complete guide from how to get there to what to do, eat, and expect in Pulau Ketam.
Quick Pulau Ketam Guide (Save This)
When you are in Pulau Ketam, here's a list of what you can and must do:-
1. Eat Fried Ice Cream
Somehow or rather, the locals there sell very good fried ice cream. Or it was partly due to the hot weather there. There are a couple of flavours for you to choose from, and my favourite were chocolate, vanilla, and yam.
2. Take a boat ride and visit the Fish Farm
Thanks to our friend’s relatives, who were willing to bring us out on a boat ride. Instead of hopping on a big boat, we went on a modern sampan, and navigated our way to the middle of the sea. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the experience where our faces were slapped by the strong winds, and our hairs were all messed up.
3. Walk through the stilt villages…. It is not that big after all
One of the most unique features of Pulau Ketam is its wooden houses built on stilts above the water. Take your time to wonder. You will notice everyday life unfolding, from laundry drying in the sun, fishermen at work, and children playing along the walkways.
4. Explore the Island by Bicycle
If walking isn't what you fancy, you can get around Pulau Ketam by bike. Since there are no cars, cycling feels safe and relaxing. You will pass through quiet village paths, local homes, and small shops, which is perfect for soaking in the atmosphere.
5. Enjoy a Fresh Seafood Feast
This is easily the highlight of any Pulau Ketam trip. Restaurants here serve incredibly fresh seafood, often caught the same day. Some of the must-try dishes are:
Claypot Ray Fish
Fried Soft Shell Prawns in Thai Sauce
Seaweed Soup with Fish Balls
Kam Heong Crab
6. Stop by a local kopitiam
Beyond seafood, you will also find small kopitiam serving simple, comforting meals. I am so embarrassed to say this, but guess what; in less than 24 hours in Pulau Ketam, I gained 3kg. Yes, you see this right, 3kg, thanks to the continuous eating from the moment we stepped on this island until we bid farewell to this place.
Oyster Omelette
Lala Omelette
Pork Porridge
Chicken Burger
Must-try!! The chicken patty was fried first before it was grilled and enveloped with egg.
Fried Prawn Fritters
I tried “7 Geh” too. According to the locals, 7 Geh is made from porridge and rice flour; it is only available in Pulau Ketam. Taste-wise, I find it quite similar to Chi Hun Keng (Fried Tapioca Noodle). The difference is gravy and sauce.
7. Experience the simplicity of island living
Pulau Ketam isn't about attractions - it's about atmosphere. What I love about Pulau Ketam is the neighborhood and kampung spirit among the locals; they know every single one who lives there, and security is the least concern in this area. They are not worried about theft at all! Such a peaceful life!
However, one needs to take note of Pulau Ketam is the hygiene. Apparently, all poops go directly to the “pulau”, and that’s why the water is never blue or green color. And you will notice that the plants by the river are extremely green and healthy, probably thanks to the poops that man has contributed.
Final thought -- Pulau Ketam may not be flashy, but that's exactly its charm. Between the fresh seafood, laid-back atmosphere, and unique village setting, it's a refreshing change from the usual city routine. For a short day trip that feels surprisingly far from Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Ketam is definitely one to add to your list.
Key Notes
1. What is the ferry price from Port Klang to Pulau Ketam?
The duration is around 30 - 40 minutes, and the price is around RM10 - RM20 per way (depending on the ferry you opt).
2. Is Pulau Ketam worth visiting?
If you are looking for a quick escape from Kuala Lumpur and a slower pace of life, then yes, Pulau Ketam is absolutely worth a visit.
